Weather Impacts on Surface Transportation

image2

The pressures on surface transportation are increasing:

  • Shrinking budgets for maintenance & operations
  • Increasing shift towards a Just in Time economy
  • Increasing population & traffic
  • Greater client demand for free flowing traffic
  • Demand for safer travel
  • Changing weather patterns & increased impacts

There are, of course, new technologies coming on board to mitigate some of these issues, such as improved engineering techniques, connected vehicles and increasing use of autonomous vehicles, to name but a few.

The same can be said for improved surface transportation weather techniques, however I have learnt that this can be a tricky beast to handle, as it's a complex topic to say the least. Many folk are rightly apprehensive in knowing where to start or how to improve weather applications for their road networks, however my role is to guide and assist you in terms of what works and what doesn't. As when it comes to weather applications and having worked with dozens of DOTs, its certainly not the case of one size fits all!

Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS)

image3

Road (or equally runway/rail) Weather Information Systems generally comprise of 3 major parts:

  • Weather Observations from static or mobile weather station(s)
  • Data collection and management system
  • Weather forecasts

The above is a simplified version, as there can be numerous other parts, such as:

  • Non-weather observations e.g. cameras or traffic sensors etc
  • Decision Support etc
  • Reports e.g. Salt/chemical management, performance metrics etc

I can provide help in planning an effective RWIS:

What sensors to use and where to locate them?

How to train your staff and get the most out of your systems?

What you need to demand from vendors.
